Tucson, AZ - The 2007 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament featured nearly 200 players from 27 different states and two countries who headed to the Arizona desert to kick off the high school season. At least twenty-five Major League scouts (including two national cross-checkers) representing thirteen different organizations, attended the event. There were a few particular players the scouts came to see, but they left with a larger follow list than they came with.
The Arizona Diamondbacks were gracious to host the event at their spring training complex in Tucson and the level of play on the field lived up to the quality of the venue. With a coaching staff made up of numerous big league coaches and scouts, the players were treated like big leaguers and they responded with an entertaining and high level of play.
Our scouting staff compiled a list of the Top Ten Senior Prospects who attended the event. We selected these players based upon workouts, overall projectability and tournament game play.
1. Robert Carson | LHP/OF | 6-3/225 | L/L | Hattiesburg (MS)
Carson, an unsigned senior has a ++ body with a loose, easy arm action. He topped at 94 mph and was sitting at 88-89 with his downhill FB, so it is no surprise that he is willing to use it consistently. His breaking ball flashed tight spin and good depth. He also showed good command with his CH, although his differential may be too much. Although he profiles best from the bump, he was also extremely talented from the plate. Carson is a great talent that has an unbelievable future.
2. Cole Cook | RHP/1B | 6-6/195 | L/R | Palisades (CA)
Cook continues to take the mound with an awesome presence and confidence. He topped at 91 and sat between 88 mph and 91 mph with good arm side run. He shows an 11/5 CB with sharp break and tight spin, while his CH may have been most impressive with good arm side run and more importantly command, command, command! The sky is the limit with Cole and we expect him to do very good things at the next levels!
*Committed to Pepperdine University
3. Nathan Kilcrease | RHP | 5-7/165 | R/R | Glenwood (AL)
Kilcrease, an Alabama signee, showed SEC ability with a FB that sat at 88-89 and topped at 91 mph. This FB had good, 2 seam, arm side action that produced ground balls. He also showed two (CB & CH) well above avg. off speed pitches with good command and feel. He has repeatable delivery and arm action with good direction. Nathan should be able to make an impact at Alabama.
*Committed to University of Alabama
4. Taylor Cole | RHP/SS | 6-1/180 | R/R | Bishop Gorman (NV)
Cole is an athletic RHP / SS that profiles best from the mound. He topped at 90 mph for us and was sitting at 86-88, but if you catch him during the regular season you should see him sit at 90-91 and top at 94 or so. He has good feel on his ground ball - inducing CH and his CB is above avg. when he gets it out front more in his delivery. Cole, a BYU signee, should continue to get better and we could see him on TV in the near future.
*Committed to Brigham Young University
5. Chase Bradford | RHP/3B | 6/195 | R/R | Silverado (NV)
Bradford is a legitimate 2-way guy. You will need to flip a coin to decide where he is better. He was consistently 89 mph with a tight bighting, 10/4 shaped CB. He maintained arm speed on his CH that showed good arm side tail. Then you watch a solid approach at the plate and steady glove work and footwork in the INF and you have to decide where you like him best?!? The answer is that he is well above avg. at both and will probably do both in college and then pitch at the next level. Either way, the Community College of Southern Nevada has an impact player arriving on campus in the Fall semester.

6. Stephen Johnson | SS/RHP | 6-1/170 | R/R | Poway (CA)
With an Athletic and muscular build, Johnson shows great mobility with his feet and versatility with arm angles. A mature player, he has polished hands and an easy arm from the left side of the INF. He is that player that you hope gets an extra 10 ground balls in workouts just because it is fun to watch! At the plate he has a quiet approach with excellent rhythm and explosive bat speed. Johnson should have a solid career at The University of Arizona and beyond.
*Committed to the University of Arizona
7. Trey Vice | LHP/1B | 6-3/215 | L/L | Westbrook Christian (AL)
Vice approaches pitching with excellent confidence and composure. He sat at 86-87 mph, and was able to achieve downhill action with some cut. His 1/7 CB had tight spin and late break and sometimes appeared as a slurve type pitch. He also has demand on a split finger that had late drop. Vice throws from a high ¾ slot and has a repeatable, fluid delivery. He should have success in Conference USA with UAB.
*Committed to the University of Alabama-Birmingham
8. Cory Vaughn | OF/3B | 6-3/220 | R/R | Jesuit (CA)
The sky is the limit with Cory. Also a football standout in HS, he is now able to concentrate on just baseball, which will help him refine his skills to go along with great physical tools. He has an athletic, muscular body with long limbs and strong hands. He has a ++ arm from the OF and shows excellent power from the plate. Once Vaughn focused strictly on baseball and is influenced by Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn at San Diego St, expect to see huge jumps in production.
*Committed to San Diego State University
9. Gaspar Santiago | LHP | 6-2/195 | L/L | Puerto Rico Baseball Academy (PR)
Santiago may have never pitched in 40 degree weather before and he topped at 91 mph! A strong bodied LHP, it is safe to say you could expect consistent low to mid 90s from Santiago if the weather was typical AZ weather. He needs more consistency with his off speed pitches, but his delivery and arm action were solid. He also showed an excellent move to first base, an attribute that can consistently change games.
10. Ryan Acosta | RHP/SS | 6-3/175 | S/R | Clearwater Central Catholic (FL)
Acosta is a legitimate two-way player as a middle infielder along with unlimited potential as a pitcher. The University of Georgia has a stud coming there way and he could make an impact in the INF and on the mound. He profiled best for us on the mound where he topped at 91 mph and sat at 87-88 mph. He showed well above avg. off speed stuff and mixed in a solid slider as well. In the INF he has steady, fluid actions with ++ arm strength. He flashes pop in an aggressive, fluid approach at the plate.
*Committed to the University of Georgia
